Living in perpetually moderate SoCal weather, even a day of rain wreaks havoc on us. L.A. drivers just don’t know what to do, so traffic is even more crazy than it usually is. Understandably, those in other parts of the world having Real Weather have no pity when we complain, and honestly we know we have no right to either.
Even with our short and sometimes non-existent winters, just about now I start looking forward to spring’s promise. The rebirth of colorful flowers; the drought-starved grass sprouting green; leaves returning to naked trees all bring back joy to a winter-gray world in need of cheering. Whether we consciously realize it or not, we interact with color constantly, absorbing it in every cell. Color restores and balances us on all levels: Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It is theorized that being surrounded with colorless season as well as being stuck indoors is unnerving to us. It can even be the cause of psychological problems such as “Seasonal Affective Disorder,” mood swings including depression and what some refer to as “cabin fever.”
Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, hope and fertility. It’s no wonder that it’s considered a healing color and is related to the heart chakra (one of seven energy centers in the body). Interestingly, it’s the most restful color for the human eye which is why it’s frequently used in hospitals. It also symbolizes stability and endurance.
Green, as opposed to red, means safety. Universally, it’s the color that lets us know that it is safe to go. Even though in Los Angeles that all depends on the weather.
As I write this, it’s in the high seventies here, yet winter is in full swing in the rest of the country. There are epic storms and freezing temperatures grinding things to a halt in many areas of the world. Yet, it won’t be long before spring’s warmth frees us from a long, monochromatic hibernation.
Until then, a one-of-a-kind Lalamel hand-dyed scarf offers a bit of colorful silky warmth to remind you that spring will be here soon. And, what terrific Valentine presents they make!
